Description
Lighthouses are a symbol of safe harbor, the guardians of sailors and seamen. This piece is based upon the Lindau Lighthouse in Germany, located in Lindau on Lake Constance. The lighthouse was built from 1853 to 1856 at the western mole in the entrance to the harbour of Lindau and was first lit on 4 October 1856. During the first years of operation the light was created by an open oil fire. At that time the keeper constantly had to keep the fire burning in great pans and operate a bell and foghorn. Nowadays it is gas-based and operated electronically. The light house was automated in the early 1990s. The light is lit on demand by ships using radio signals. With its clock face and beautiful detailing, the lighthouse is truly a sight to be seen!
I hope this piece brings you as much enjoyment as I had in creating it! You can see more of my artwork on my website, BookSmithStudio.com.
